Born to Drive

FF David LaForge - FDNY
Ladder Co. 20

FF David LaForge, 50, was born to drive.  In Ladder 20, LaForge was the chauffeur.  It was his responsibility to drive the ladder truck when he and his brothers left their house on Lafayette Street in Soho.  On the morning of September 11, 2001, FF LaForge was behind the wheel when the men of Ladder 20 headed straight into the hell that was the World Trade Center.  He was one of the seven members of Ladder 20 who died there.

Driving was not merely his responsibility.  It was his passion.  It was something that he loved and that he became proficient at during his twenty-four year career in the FDNY.  Prior to joining the FDNY, he worked for North American Van Lines, driving all over the United States.  As Ladder 20's chauffeur he never failed to prepare.  He studied maps of New York City zealously to ensure that wherever Ladder 20 needed to be, he got them there safely and as quickly as possible.

He was not married.  He had no children.  He was survived by his parents, over whom he watched, his sister, Jane, and her three children.  A man who never shied away from helping those he loved, he died doing something that he loved with men he loved as brothers.

Fifteen years gone but not forgotten.  Not today.  Not tomorrow.
