Risen Heroes

Courage is resistance to Fear,
Mastery of Fear,
Not Absence of Fear.
- Mark Twain

This morning, in the (now that summer is over) quiet Shore hamlet of Lake Como, New Jersey, it shall be my great pleasure and privilege to participate in the 13th Annual Fallen Heroes Memorial 5K.  Its roots sadly trace back to September 11, 2001.  It serves to honor the memory of all those who died that day, including the brave men and women who dashed headlong into the Mouth of Hell in order to save others.

It also serves to assist a service member in need, which it is doing again this year in connection with the Brennan Stands Alone Foundation, whose namesake and inspiration - U.S. Army 1st Lt. Brian Brennan epitomizes "Jersey Strong".  This year, the recipient of this event's charitable works is United States Marine Sgt. John Peck.  I would describe Sgt. Peck as "incredible".  However, having lived close to half a century without ever once being accused of understatement, I would like to keep my streak intact.

I shall content myself with the feeling - however slight it may be - of doing something this morning designed to give a little back to young men like 1st Lt. Brennan and Sgt. Peck, both of whom gave more than a young person should ever be called upon to give and who have not only refused to allow theirs to be a life defined by their injury but who have continued to inspire as they continue to aspire.
