It's Not Always the Fools....

Without heroes we are all plain people
And don't know how far we can go.

-Bernard Malamud

There is a line from an old song that goes something akin to "Only fools rush in where angels fear to tread."  Sunday - events that unfolded in or about Prescott, Arizona served to remind one and all that sometimes angels rush in to such horrible places too.

Nineteen members of the Granite Mountain Intraagency Hotshot Crew of the Prescott, Arizona Fire Department died in the line of duty on Sunday.  They died while battling a raging, out-of-control wildfire.  They died under conditions that - to be kind - sounded nothing short of horrifying.  They died as a result of having willingly and knowingly placed themselves in harm's way in an effort to help preserve the lives and property of their neighbors and of their community - including those members of it who they may not have known.

They died disproving that old song lyric.  It is not only the fool who rushes in where an angel fears to tread.  Often, other angels shall do so too.  A lesson learned anew on Sunday in Arizona.
